Jesus’ Word? It Ain’t Rocket Science Folks

For many, the holiday season that begins on Thanksgiving, revolves around Christmas and ends with the New Year is a spiritual time in which we supposedly honor Jesus Christ  the man AND the son of God and for me it was always more about the man Himself than the myriad of images that have been put forth by the massive number organized Christian sects, the members of each believing there’s is the only “true” faith.

I found it very simple, really.  Jesus was a good man who lived His life in an exemplary manner and if we truly want to honor Him all we have to do is live our lives in the manner in which He lived His.  That’s all.  Nothing else is required.  We don’t need 10 million dollar church “campuses” and we don’t need ostentatious displays of piety with which to pillory our perceived “enemies” as Godless.  All we need is to live our lives as Jesus lived His.

We don’t need the Pat Robertsons and the Jerry Farewells and the Jimmy Swaggarts, or anyone else who has become hugely wealthy peddling their interpretations of what Jesus said or wants us to do (nearly all of whom include sending THEM tons of money as a major component) because Jesus Himself told us all of those things and more.

Need to know how best to deal with a situation?  it’s as simple as opening your Bible, learning what Jesus did in a similar situation and then doing that.  Jesus didn’t equivocate.  He didn’t talk in riddles and change His story to suit his audience.  His piety didn’t end at the front door of his bank.  His message was ever one and the same and left no room for doubt in the mind of anyone who truly wished to emulate HIM.

Those of you who profess to be of the “one true faith” because you show up on Sunday and put money in the plate after a week of condemning the poor for being poor, the sick for being sick and the elderly for being old and worst of all, claiming you do those things in the name of and according to the teachings of Jesus Christ?

Well, let’s just say that you’ll deserve everything that’s going to happen to you when the day comes to finally sort out who honored Him and who didn’t.  I personally have no problem sorting out who’s who.  I may not get into heaven but it won’t be because I spent my life attacking those Jesus spent his defending.  Everything you need to know to be a good Christian is right there in Matthew in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats:

Matthew 25:31-40-31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.  34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

There.  Do you get it now?  If you don’t I suppose you never will   As for those pesky goats and what happens to them when it comes time to be measured, I’m going to assume that if you really care what the Bible says instead of what Bill O’Reilly says, you’ll look it up yourself.

That’s it folks.  Nothing else is required.  He doesn’t set one race or one nation above another, He doesn’t preach hatred for those of other faiths, He doesn’t ask us to spread his word by roaming around the world blowing people up and taking their stuff… He simply asks us to treat one another decently, as we would ask to be treated ourselves.  Those of you who insist on changing or adding to his words, by merely presuming you have any right to do so, demean and dishonor his name.  There’s no sin in being poor, no sin in being old, no sin in being lame or sick.  The sin is in claiming that the poor, the old, the lame and the sick are somehow less in the eyes of God and Jesus Christ than you are and don’t deserve the same consideration you feel is your due.  I draw my line right there.
