The Worm’s Eye View – State of the Union

Trying To Make Hamburgers Out of Sacred Cows

We all know what the State of the Union Address is. It’s where the President of the United States gets up in front of the other two branches of our so called government and tells them and us which cow is gonna be eating whose cabbage for the next 12 months. In the process, he’ll reiterate all the promises he made during the last SOTU address… or his campaign if this is his first one… being damned careful not to actually commit himself to keeping any of them while making it sound like that’s what he’s doing.

And of course the true believers lap it up like a cat whisker-dipping premium cream, failing or maybe refusing to realize that with minor variations in names and numbers and the order of delivery, they’re hearing the same thing they heard last year and in fact the same thing they’ve heard for the last X number of years, depending on how long this particular POTUS has been in office.

I remember watching SOTU addresses when I was a kid because on that night it was all you were going to find on the three channels we had back then and early on I remember sitting there thinking, “What a wonderful country this is going to be when this dude gets through implementing his agenda.”. Well… something to that effect anyway.

Some of the luster began to flake off as I got older though and I eventually reached the point where my hopes for the good life began to shift toward “If this guy implements his agenda” instead of “when” and eventually rolling on over to a slim to none hope that even a tenth of the pie in the sky we were being promised was ever going to see the light of day.

It wasn’t until about the beginning of Bill Clinton’s second term that it hit me like a ton of cow crap falling off a fertilizer wagon that not only was next to none of this stuff ever going to happen, but the dude making the speech knew damned well that next to none of it was ever going to happen. I even think, in their heart of hearts, his core audience knew that next to none of it would ever see the light of day but by this time they were so vested in the individual that there was no way they were ever going to call him out and admit they might not have been as right as they might have been had they judged the situation on what was happening instead of what some dude was telling them was going to happen.

Since then, I’ve often thought that we could probably do away with all that pomp and circumstance bullshit, especially since with the advent of the Tea Party since which time the galleries are loaded with ignorant, uneducated slack jawed troglodytes who not only have no idea how adults are supposed to act in public because their mamas never taught them the rudiments of common courtesy and manners but who don’t give a damn anyway.

The SOTU has become just another venue in which the radical RWs can exercise their self granted right to behave like a bunch of drunken high school jocks at a post game beer bust and… by association and the power of the mainstream media… drag the rest of us right down to that same trailer trash level in the eyes of the rest of the world.

art.joe.wilsonWhen that stupid bastard, Joe Wilson, attempted to make a centuries old tradition all about himself by screeching, “You Lie!” at the president of the United States at a function where his only obligation was to show up and at least pretend that there was still some coherency left in the effing clown show our form of government has become, it rendered any attempt to get 500 some odd whores and pimps together in the same room and expect any level of decorum and civility a thoroughly lost cause.

I’ve grown thoroughly sick and tired of the common folks in this country being lumped in with gap toothed Teabilly morons sitting around in circles and judging each others beer farts and bragging about their various forms of small dick compensators and “slapping their old ladies back in line”.

And the SOTU… with it’s week or so of subsequent analysis by all manner of “experts” from Joe the Fake Plumber to Sarah “Mooselips” Palin… who has managed to turn being a cheap know nothing grifter into a venue for collecting millions from rank and file RWs only slightly more stupid than she is… has simply become another sorry spectacle by which the rest of the world judges our country and finds it not only wanting but comically wanting.

I think most of us are beginning to realize that the state of the union that exists on that night is not necessarily the state of the union that will exist the next morning and it’s damned sure not the state of the union that the mainstream media is going to represent it to be based on the opposition of the Wall Street turdminions to anything the POTUS has said or done down to and including his effing choice of necktie that night. I don’t know how much it costs us to give the GOP all these chances to kick crutches out from old ladies as the bus pulls in but if it’s a goddammed dime that’s ten cents too effing much. Why not just dump the whole damned thing and spend that week or ten days… you know, governing the country… and save the meaningless speeches and empty promises for the campaign trail where we taxpayers only have to pay for part of it.

I’m 71 and On SS/MC. I Don’t Have Time For The Usual BS.

I had just about decided to give up on having my own blog page, even before that whining snot nosed little millennial piece of crap blew in here with his “death to all old people” garbage last week and got me pissed off all over again.  I never have had much of a readership here anyway and realizing that this latest generation contains people like this James Dotson character in unknown numbers can definitely be discouraging, not because they have anything valid to add to any discussion but because when you’ve seen enough entitled little pricks like that… people who have the same sense of entitlement as a billionaire’s larvae but without the money to exercise it (for which he blames every working class forebear he has)… you begin to wonder what the hell you’re fighting for anyway.

James Dotson of course, exhibits the most extreme version of an attitude that has been slowly destroying this country since at least the 1980s and probably on back into my starry eyed idealist days when the important thing was to fight the good fight as if you intended to win it, not merely to get the best bargain you can from people who have no desire to bargain with you or honor any bargain they do make.  We had our sellouts even then, the difference being that these days the sellouts appear to be gaining the majority among democrats.  Today we have obviously centrist and right of center Democrats calling themselves the “left” in this country, some of them even calling themselves liberals which to anyone around in the 1950s and 60s is a fricking joke.

I asked this question yesterday on Twitter, and while it got a few retweets it DIDN’T get any answers, so I’m going to ask it again here. With Democrats, since the 1980s, having done little more than piss away every social gain the common people had managed to secure since the Great depression, why is everyone running around acting so dismayed that the bought and paid for lunatics we’ve allowed infiltrate the henhouse are now busy sucking the damned eggs?

Why is it that the only Democratic president we’d had for the almost three decades preceding 2008 was a center right… actually pretty much a conservative by the original meaning of the term… politician who  proceeded to preside over the passage of more significant legislation beneficial to Wall Street and the Republican party than to the common ordinary working people, much of which was outright detrimental to the elderly, disabled and working poor?  And why did the middle class stand up and cheer him while he was doing it?

Feel like ranting about America’s jobs and manufacturing base winding up somewhere else while our skilled labor force flips burgers at McDonald”s? Check out NAFTA. Oh and all those crocodile tears y’all shed daily about the hungry kids? Take a close look at the 1990s version of welfare “reform” which marked the beginning of the all out right wing open assault on the social safety nets.  Too big to fail banks and too big to jail bankers?  Hmmm.  Wasn’t that largely a result of the repeal of Glass Steagall and the abandonment of other safeguards that had been put in place to protect the public from what we’re living through today during Bill Clinton’s watch?

There’s more, but you get the idea.  And every one of those actions has a counterpart… in some cases, an extension… going on today, (PRTA etc.).   The relentless march toward corporate Fascism under an economic dictatorship presided over by the reptilian Kochs or someone or some group just as evil  that began under Reagan has pretty much continued without a stumble under two Republican administrations (which was to be expected of course) AND two Democratic ones (which while I didn’t expect it the first time, I’m sad to say I did this one).

While we’re all wrapped up in the one bone (and I’m not sure it is or ever was a real bone) we’ve supposedly gotten from the right, they’ve simply marched into the virtually unguarded store and marched back out with 98% of whatever the hell they wanted while we stood impotently on the sidewalk distracted by the latest congressional dog and pony show.  As a matter of fact, the radical right is STILL doing it and why not since the Democrats have admitted that they can’t stop them?

When there are no consequences for sociopathic acts those acts are pretty apt to go right on happening since there’s no incentive to stop committing them, am I right?  And what are Democrats doing about it other ranting about what we’re GOING to do about all this the next election cycle.  I’m surprised the RWs haven’t laughed themselves to death by now which I suppose might be the Democratic plan to get rid of ‘em since nothing else appears on the horizon.

I also must have asked ten times in the last couple of weeks about how we were going to accomplish this “punishment for their sins” when all of the key players on the other side are from districts that have been safely gerrymandered to preclude a Democrat from ever being elected.  Know what the closest thing I got to an answer was?  “The Tea Party is threatening to take them down already.”.   (Does that mean the Tea Party’s  morans are going to be the saviors of democracy in America?  Not bloody likely, is it?)

Well, call me dense, but I fail to see how one RWNJ supplanting another in a district designed to exclude Dems from even participating is somehow indicative of a Democratic victory there but of course I’m not as smart as most of you younger folks.  Maybe I’ll be convinced when I see a Democrat elected in the 8th congressional district in Ohio but until then I guess I’ll just stay stupid.

And of course I see a number of you one trick pony types are already sharpening the knives for the “Emos” and the “puropolists” or “puritopians” to repeat just a couple of the newer terms I’m seeing bandied about just in case all these predictions of a rout in favor of the Democrats should prove a wee bit overoptimistic.  Nothing like having your scapegoats lined up and ready for the sacrificial altar.  But if you guys can see that far ahead, why couldn’t you see where all the compromise and “bipartisanship” was leading back in the Clinton 90s?  Why couldn’t you see where sacrificing the elderly, poor and sick was taking us during the Bush days? Why is the only real, concrete accomplishment you can point to from this current administration, the ACA, being used as just another whip to punish the serfs with?

So many questions I’d like to see answers to, and so far all I’m seeing is a ton of “They won’t do that. They don’t dare do that” followed by a round of  “They DID do that?  They DID dare Well we’ll just vote ‘em out next year (those that are up next year. The rest we’ll have to wait three years for).”  Fact is they’ve dared to do just about everything on their agenda over the past five years and as far as I can see, the Democrats… from the top down… have been pretty damned much powerless to stop them.

As for the leading lights on Twitter?  Zach Green will sit on the can and labor mightily to bring forth one of his tenth grade level hashtags and “inspirational” tweets and his most ardent followers will trip all over themselves trying to repeat his every word so’s to bask in the reflected glory of their chosen one but nobody that really matters in this fight will ever see it.

Shoq will offer up his usual round of Centrist scorn and ridicule for practically everyone not… well… Shoq… and Uncle MIltie  will thump his “liberal” chest and blame the whole thing on the liberals he professes in his bio to be one of while his little band of groupies slaps him on the back and tells him how wonderful he is… which is why we even have groupies in the first place, right Miltie?

ABL will continue to assert that PBO is incapable of making a mistake, let alone doing anything that might benefit those who have paid his way at the expense of the least among us, which is simply something that any politician has to do these days if he’s going to be a politician.  Or at least be a successful one.

On that same note, the rest of the of usual suspects will be offering up their usual load of “immaculate perception”, analyzing the whole fiasco down to the quantum level… especially President Obama’s role in it… desperately trying to make it look like just another brilliant move in the “11 dimensional chess game” he’s been playing since taking office and which is of course far too deep and complicated to be understood by anyone but him, let alone by the mere mortals and common people he’s supposed to be governing.

People like me who try to question any of it will once again be branded RW operatives at best, out and out racists if the question is about anything PBO may or may not have said or done.  Of course silly me, I voted for him twice not because I wanted a fricking  Secret Squirrel “chess game” I couldn’t understand but because I wanted clear, uncomplicated and transparent governance that I could understand and he was promising that.

To be perfectly frank, this whole put your unwavering blind  faith in one man… ANY one man… is abhorrent to me because I love reading my history books and history is full of horrible examples of what has happened when nations have done that.

I want to know what the fricking plan is… although I’d probably settle right now for simply knowing there IS a plan.  I’m not about to blindly take anybody’s word for anything and one of the things I find contradictory among Democrats today is the vast number of them who refuse to accept any religion because they would have to do so based on blind faith… while they at the same time they… in an act far more apt to have immediate consequences on the lives of themselves and their progeny…  are willing to blindly accept virtually every utterance made by a mere mortal… a paid professional politician no less… solely on that same level of blind faith, urging others to do so (proselytizing) and even attacking those who don’t.  Fact is I’m not sure you’re rejecting religion at all as much as you’re creating a new one for yourselves but I’m pretty certain there are enough of ‘em out there already to keep us in hate and discontent for the next 3-4 generations at least.

You can take it to your favorite Wall Street bank that I will never… under any circumstances… vote Republican again and that I will never fail to … as I’ve done for 50 years now… vote in any election I’m capable of and qualified to vote in so don’t waste your time and mine flinging the usual “Emo” bullshit at me because it ain’t gonna stick.  I don’t care to engage Centrist juvenile name callers any more than I do RW ones and for much the same reasons so unless you have something new to bring to the table save yourself some time and me the trouble of blocking you.  Have a nice day.

Talk About Thin Skins!

Today’s post may seem weird as far as context is concerned but the fact is that most of these aren’t published here only but also on other blog sites around the web.  This is because nobody ever comes here and I would like for them to be read by at least a few people now and then. For example yesterday’s rant was cross posted on Daily Kos where it drew the largest response in the form of comments of any post I have ever made anywhere with 90% of them being personal or straw man attacks that failed utterly to address even a single one of the issues I was raising.  Not to worry, that was expected.  But anyway, this post is the response I left for those folks over there.  I post it here for anyone who stumbles in here and also gets all exercised over yesterday’s post because it points out some rather glaring facts that today’s progressives would prefer not to have to talk about.  I really don’t know what’s worse, the ignorance of the Teapers or the self righteousness of the Progressives.

This started as a comment in response to the comments my previous diary elicited from some obviously thin skinned folks who chose to ignore the message and attack the messenger much in the same way their counterparts on the right are fond of doing.  I’ve been arguing online with right wingers online for roughly 25 years now so those types of responses are something I’m used to although it has taken me a while to realize that the “left” is not only just as capable of using these tactics in their version of engagement as is the right, they’re also just as apt to do so.

The fact that so many chose to respond to my rant is actually rather gratifying in that it tells me that you at least glanced at it, maybe even thought about what I was saying for 15-20 seconds, even if you didn’t get it.  The fact that so few of you actually did get it, with the majority preferring to focus on the manner of delivery rather than the message itself however, is not so gratifying.  All I can say to that is, “Hey! It got your attention.”.

Rather than try to respond to each individual attack I thought maybe it would be OK to just sum it all up in a new diary before moving on, having learned, if nothing else, that when you scratch away the thin veneer of self righteousness with which we all armor ourselves against the world, we’re all… Progressive or Teaper… pretty much the same quivering little balls of totally self absorbed ego, ever alert to anything that might require us to think beyond our own little personal circle of awareness and ready to strike back instantly at any perceived attempt to do so.

I finally gave up worrying about smug self absorbed progressives being offended by what I write.  As far as I’m concerned, they’re just marginally less (if even that) responsible for the shape this country is in than the right is.  You don’t have to be a millionaire to embrace the “I’ve got mine, eff you” philosophy that is the hallmark of American Neocapitalism.

Yesterday’s post apparently failed in its purpose because of my lack of skill in presenting my message.  I never claimed to be a writer and I wouldn’t really know where to start answering some of the smug self righteous comments even if I thought I could provide any answers that any of you would accept.

I could say in the one instance, “No, my generation did NOT give us Reagan, a part of it did, just as a part of YOUR generation gave us George W Bush. Twice. And yeah, I know, he stole those elections yadayada but he still had to get enough votes to steal them. Somebody damned sure voted for him.

We could have looked at the things your generation has failed to maintain using your own yardstick, many of which I mentioned in the rant and don’t need to repeat… but after reading the comments here I’ve realized that specifics are the last things any of you want to talk about, preferring instead the usual snarky little putdowns and straw man attacks that mark most exchanges of opinion on the Internet where it’s more important to come off “cool” than it is to actually engage someone.

The fact that so many of you can only see the rant as “generational warfare”… a couple of you even managing to work lameass “get off my lawn” references into your enlightened responses… doesn’t alter the fact that it was the generations before yours that provided any advances for the common people that have occurred since WWII and it is yours that is standing by and watching them being taken away one by one.

So continue your little march over the cliff, accepting no responsibility for what’s happening today because it’s easier to blame it all on something you think happened (or didn’t happen) before you were born, as in “Our generation was the first to inherit a world worse than our parents did.”.   Pretty piss poor excuse for not busting your ass to make it better for the next generation I’d say but hey, you guys have already dismissed that as “generation wars” and I’ve got nothing else.

You can’t avoid the fact that every one of the things I mentioned and you refuse to talk about is occurring on YOUR watch and that you had a chance to correct our “mistakes” instead of compounding them.  Instead you are choosing, of your own volition, to give up the apparently inadequately and too few good things we DID manage to fumble around and accomplish while claiming it’s because WE didn’t do enough?  Effing incredible!

Jeez People, Get a Damned Grip!

This started out to be a rant about Syria but so many other things kept dovetailing it seems to have become just another general curmudgeonly dissertation on why I’m not too happy with what the younger generation has done with the world they inherited from us senile old farts.  Granted, it wasn’t anywhere near perfect when you got your hands on it but we really thought you’d do your part to make it better.

I’ll say one thing about this Syrian situation though, it sure has brought the Cult of Obama worshipers and groupies out in force.

Look, once and for all, Barack Obama is NOT God.  He’s not even the Messiah that so many of you want fervently to believe he is.  He’s just a man… a good man even… who gets up in the morning and puts his pants on one leg at a time and pees between his feet just like you and even me, believe it or not.

If the military/industrial/financial complex wants us to bomb Syria, we’re going to bomb Syria and all the Twitter “activism” taking place is nothing but the age old art of distraction playing the role it has always played when a government wants con it’s people into doing something they might not otherwise want to do.  Think Tonkin Gulf for the 21st century.  As good Democrats, you DO know what that was, right?  Or maybe you had to be around back then. It was the epitome of “convenient provocation” for its day. (And to my way of thinking, it ultimately brought us Sarah Palin but that’s not really pertinent here.)

Now before anyone starts grabbing at their fake pearls and screeching that I’m attacking their political demigods, do something that many of you seem to have been unable to do since 2008 and that’s stop and think about life in the underbelly of the real world for a change.  You know, the part that 99% of our politicians and beltway pundits and more than a few of our smug middle class Twitter types have never had any part in and have no desire whatsoever to actually know anything about.

Then know that when Fascism has finally enshrouded this country for good it’s not going to be just because we have Republican sellouts or even Tea Party wannabe brown shirts  in this country though they will of course have a huge role.   It will be due also in a large measure to people on the nominal “left”who let their fawning adoration for a charismatic politician… ANY charismatic politician… Remember the Reagan Democrats back in the 80s… take precedence over a careful examination and consideration of the actual issues in any situation.  I hear it every flipping day.  He’s our president, It’s our DUTY to back him up no matter what he does or doesn’t do.  I’ll tell you right now that I’m having trouble believing that much pure bullcrap could be stacked that damned high and still not topple under its own weight.

My Great Depression/Dustbowl Okie folks’ generation gave us Social Security and the New Deal, mine gave us Medicare and Medicaid, the Civil rights and Voting Rights acts and LBJ’s Great Society.   You don’t have to preach to us about it, we were the ones out there DOING it.  What’s the majority of yours ever done?  I can tell you part of it.

This generation of voters is busily pissing away every damned thing my generation and those before fought and bled for and doing it one Medicare/Medicaid cut or one cost of living increase or one decent manufacturing job or one pension at a time.  You sit on your asses couches sucking up suds and tweeting blow by blow coverage of whatever games and whichever race is on that day and when the fun’s over you blather a few poignant little jabs at the right wingers or maybe the “Emos” if you’re turned that way, or maybe you make a lovely little post to express your utter devotion… not to this country or this society but to your president… who is after all more than the sum of the country and it’s people… and then you wander off to bed all moral and smug and self satisfied, figuring you’ve done your duty as a good little modern day activist.

Activists were the people who went out and WON the battle for civil and voting rights fifty damned years ago, not those who stood around flipping angry tweets, usually to the choir while today’s activist SCOTUS made a mockery of everything we fought for and better people than me even died for.  All you did was stand around saying “They won’t do that” until they had done it and then it was “How dare they?” until the next shiny object appeared on the horizon.  More examples? Sure. I could fill a damned book with ‘em.

When Viet Nam was over we made a vow we would never allow this country to become involved in another undeclared unjust war for profit again.  Bullshit! We have had nothing BUT one damned invasion, bombing, shelling, droning and occupation after another and the American people are not one dime richer or better off because of any of them.  And yet every time some silver tongued snake oil salesman starts pimping us to the MIC/Wall Street bunch, we all line up for our turn in the barrel because if we don’t they can’t guarantee our safety or whatever the bullshit of the day is.

Goddammit, if someone ever really comes after your ass, the flipping government can’t guarantee your safety anyway.  They didn’t do it when we were attacked by the Saudis… yeah, most of them including OBL were Saudis… on 9/11 and they can’t do it now no matter how many people they’re spying on.  You’d better be figuring out some way to do that yourself, hopefully without letting your 4 yr old play with your little organ substitute..

We’re not only still treating our Viet Nam vets like crap after four fricking decades, we’re allowing Washington to create entire new generations of shell shocked vets to do it to and nothing’s changed in 40 years. These people aren’t having it any better than the guys in the 70s.  And you tweet angrily and bleat hashtags beating the drums for another war when you can’t even take care of the veterans from the LAST 50 years of Bombing for Dollars, another war this time to save Syrian kids… “save the kids” always gets to those who want to feel  noble as long as it doesn’t cost them anything personally because it instantly demonizes the other guy… but when you can’t even get your own damned congress or administration to save AMERICAN kids from our own home cloned terrorists it starts to ring hollow and  you can’t help but wonder how bombing those same Syrian kids with cruise missiles or rocketing them with drones is going to save them from their own leader.   I remember Hue you see.

We fought for environmental rules that would allow our kids on into the far future to have wholesome adequate food to eat and clean water to drink.  All that has been pissed away,,, every agency created to bring it about gutted and taken over by lobbyists and execs from the industries they’re supposed to be regulating… by a generation that appears to be more concerned with making sure it gets its own healthy slice of the pie than making sure there’s enough pie for everyone.  In the meantime most or our water is being poisoned, our natural resources stolen and we can’t even find out what’s IN the food we eat. They destroy the land pollute our oceans, foul the air…   Your reaction?  What else? Post angry 140 character bitch notes and bleat more hashtags.

We worked our damned asses off so our kids… YOU… could have a decent flipping education and maybe be able to make your way in the world a little better than we had been able to.  You’ve stood around making angry tweets and bleating hashtags while the right has virtually gutted public education and made it damned near impossible for a poor kid to even go to school and even those that can have to worry more about where their next meal is coming from than getting an education and big city mayors close 50 schools at a time while using tax money to finance flipping baseball fields.

We fought for labor laws and regulations that guaranteed every American an opportunity for a decent job at a living wage in a safe working environment.  Tell me “Xers” and “Yers”, where are all those jobs today?  That’s goddamned right.  They’re in the communist country whose leader once bragged that China would defeat America without ever firing a shot. Well, look around people.  They OWN us.  Or at least damned near half of us.  That’s why OUR kids are doing the dying while THEY exploit Afghanistan.

Explain to me one more time about all those jobs that have been restored under the current administration.  Bullshit! They weren’t restored, they were replaced by low wage, no benefit, part time jobettes as Jim Hightower calls them and the reason job NUMBERS aren’t lower than they were six years ago is the people who hold 2-3 of them just to try to make ends meet.  What are you doing about it youngsters? Posting pissed off tweets, bleating hashtags and punting it down the field for the next generation to deal with?  Counting on the electorate to have enough sense to vote their own interests next year and in 2016?  Why the hell would you think that?  The one certain thing in all this is that the working poor in this country are no better and many are worse off than they were in 2008.  Can we have a hashtag on that?

Again, what’s YOUR contribution been to say healthcare for elderly and disabled MC/MA recipients?  Reductions in services, increases in out of pocket costs, chained CPI, 5 minute limits on medical appointments in a for profit privatized public health clinic, no referrals to specialists?  Oh you didn’t know all that?  Actually there’s more but I’m pretty sure you need to go fire off an angry tweet or bleat a hashtag and this is already far too long.  Like I said, I could fill a book with things people like me busted our humps for just to see you cast them off as if they were nothing but bargaining chips to try to appease those who are robbing you blind every damned day.  Keep giving them what they want and expecting them to stop demanding more? WTF?

If I’ve pissed anyone off enough to unfollow or block, hopefully you’ll let me know so I can say bye bye.  While it wasn’t my sole intent, I’m pretty sure that it’s not going to make a lot of difference in my thinking and if I’m going to be attacked as a “commie” or a racist, simply for disagreeing with your president I don’t need the hassle anyway.  If the right succeeds in destroying democracy once and for all it’s because a hell of a lot of people claiming to know better helped by standing around building their little Twitter cliques and doing little else instead of kicking asses and taking names.  G’night!
